Maya and dedas playing with a stork
I just loveloveloveloving my kiddies.
Maya is just getting funnier with every day. It’s too bad I never find time to write all the funny things she says.
Yesterday, as I was showing her a preview of her first year in the new photo book I am working on, she started asking me all these questions about the umbilical cord she saw in one of the baby pictures.
I’ve explained to her that the umbilical cord connects a baby in the womb to her mother and this way the baby gets all the “food” she needs from her mommy.
After that picture, Maya also saw another one of the stork, which our kind neighbors have given us as a gift when Maya was born.

She looked at the picture and ran off to daddy, screaming: “Daddy, daddy…now where is that Stork, which brought me to you? “

Despite of the bad weather forecast we decided to go to Prater Amusement Park with Noah, Maya’s friend and his mommy Sara.
We haven’t been to Prater for ages. It really got cleaned up a lot and had a lot more rides than we could remember.
The place offers tons of entertainment for children and adults of all ages.
Maya has never been to Prater and we thought it would be a nice idea to introduce her to the fun place in Vienna. Noah was already a frequent visitor to the park and he was showing Maya around. The two of them were just more than cute.

Maya loves to surprise us by learning or repeating something new.
She always showed an extreme interest in books, magazines and everything that had pictures in it. We started teaching her by pointing to the picture and saying, “the dog says, Woof, woof, woof” or find a picture of a cow and say, “the cow says, Moo, moo, moo.”
She learned so many animals and their sounds, her body parts and colors and keeps surprising us more and more with her always growing vocabulary.
She can now repeat words after us. Just this morning, as I was calling Ryan “hoooooney”, she went “honey”. I was in shock for a bit.
Teachers in her school also commented how advance she is with her language skills. They mentioned that she is starting to understand German as well. Read the rest of this entry »

Until we went to the US last year, she was at least sleeping in her own bed, but constantly waking up for breast-feedings. After the US, she had a habit of sleeping in her bed until exactly midnight, then she wouldn’t quit crying until we brought her into our bed. Even in our own bed, she would wake up throughout the night to get some boob. So as we’ve discussed with some friends and family, we’ve been trying a new method of getting Maya to sleep in her own bed, as well as sleep through the night.

So, we finally made it to one year old! It seems like it was both a long time, and an instant. I know it’s a bit past the birthday, but things have been really hectic here. Not only are Maya and I both sick, but we did a ton of traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday. First, we flew to New York to visit my dad, and had a great time. Danny, Tara, and Jada also visited at the same time, so we got to hang out with them as well. Dad and Jody threw a birthday party for Jada and Maya, which was really nice. We got to see Justin, Eric, and Michael for the first time in a long time.

Maya loves the animals and since she is already able to imitate the sounds they make, I thought it would be a good idea to go and visit the animal kingdom on my day off.
Here are some highlights from a wonderful day we spent together at the Tiergarten Schönbrunn while daddy was working:

This past month has really been an important one for Maya. She’ll be turning 11 months on Tuesday, and I just wanted to get down everything that’s been going on with her, once again, so as not to forget. From our side, Maya finally started kindergarden, though only a few hours at a time to start with. Right now, the Austrians are thinking, “finally?”, since most kids start going much later than they do in the states. And the Americans are thinking “Kindergarden?” since here, daycare is called kindergarden. The kindergarden where Maya is takes kids from 0-3 years old.
